The Moray Gaelic Group exists to preserve and encourage the learning of the Gaelic language and promote Gaelic skills and culture. It is managed by a 3-person elected Management Committee, with support from other committee members. MGG works closely with the Moray Council Community Development Officer to move Gaelic education and culture forward in Moray. We actively engage in fundraising and financially supporting Gaelic events in/for Moray as well as attend and help with events. We also maintain the Gaelic in Moray website and Facebook page.
These roles are elected annually and are briefly described below. Any of the current office holders are happy to connect with anyone considering one of the roles and tell them more about it. Chairperson
The Chairperson (or persons – this can be a co-chair situation) is the driving force behind Moray Gaelic Group. This person is enthusiastic about Gaelic language and culture and wants to give back to the Gaelic community. The Chairperson networks with others in the Gaelic community to help grow Gaelic in Moray and seeks out learning and cultural events of interest to promote and support. This person coordinates with Moray Council Community Development Officer for joint funding operations (grant writing, event coordination, event funding) and is supported by the committee. Anticipated workload is < 5 hours a month on average.
- Leads committee meetings and creates the agenda for those meetings (usually 2-3 times per year).
- Discusses MGG affairs with members to gain feedback and to communicate events and opportunities in the Gaelic community (usually done via email).
- Represents the group in the community and helps ensure decisions are carried out (this might include attending local Gaelic events, seeking out opportunities to fundraise or otherwise support Gaelic in Moray).
- May be co-signatory with the Treasurer if needed.
Secretary
The Secretary is responsible for the record-keeping of the group – other than financial concerns. Anticipated workload is < 5 hours a month on average.
- Records meeting minutes and keeps attendance and committee records organized.
- Sends notices, agendas, and follow-up information to committee members.
- Maintains copies of important documents, reports, and decisions.
- May be co-signatory with the Treasurer if needed.
Treasurer
The Treasurer is responsible for the financial concerns of the group and manages the group’s bank account. Most payments to/from MGG are made electronically. Anticipated workload is < 5 hours a month on average.
- Tracks committee funds, income, and expenses accurately.
- Provides financial updates at meetings as needed.
- Handles payments and reimbursements from the group account and is the main signatory on the account.
Non-officer committee members
Other members of the MGG committee are non-officer roles. These people develop new ideas to promote Gaelic, give opinions/advice to the Management Committee, volunteer to help with events, vote on financial matters and generally support Gaelic in Moray. They bring ideas to the committee for promoting Gaelic in Moray. They act as support to the officers of the group and may take on some aspects of the roles not limited to the office holder if all are in agreement.
