Gaelic Names in Gaelic Orthography from OS Name Books in Highland/Lowland Border Counties – a talk by Iain Taylor
This talk by Iain Taylor examines the names collected by the Ordnance Survey (OS) and recorded in the OS Name Books in Gaelic spelling during the latter half of the 19th century. We see what “Gaelic Names in Gaelic Orthography” means, what “Highland/Lowland Border Counties” means and why these are important. We also look at local peculiarities in Gaelic grammar and vocabulary.
The talk focuses on the 9 counties of Aberdeen, Angus, Banff, Bute, Caithness, Dunbarton, Moray, Nairn and Stirling where the OS collected over 3,700 names in Gaelic spelling in 54 parishes stretching from the Pentland Firth to the Firth of Clyde, and we find out which parishes contained the most Gaelic names. The results might be surprising!
