What is Moray Gaelic Group

Moray Gaelic Group (MGG) is an organization dedicated to growing knowledge of the Gaelic language and culture in the Moray community. We have four stated objectives:

  • To preserve and foster the learning of the Gaelic Language.
  • To promote and provide training and skills in the speaking, reading and writing of the Gaelic Language.
  • To provide information for all concerned with Gaelic and Gaelic culture.
  • To encourage members to attend Gaelic Language day courses in Moray and the Highlands run by professional advisers.

We welcome anyone 16 years of age and up with an interest in Gaelic and a tie to Moray.

Who is Moray Gaelic Group

We are a collection of folks from across Moray, and several other areas of Scotland, as well as the United States. We range in age from our 30s to pensioners. We study the SpeakGaelic curriculum and have worked our way from A1, and are studying at the B1 level, as of Spring 2025.

Practical information – meetings

The MGG meets each Monday night throughout the “school year” (September thru May) at 7pm. We meet online via Zoom with our tutor, Des Scholes and study the SpeakGealic online classroom materials provided by Bòrd na Gàidhlig. Check the Calendar of Events for scheduled classes.

Committee, office holders and other technical information

The MGG was chartered in 2013. A copy of the group’s Constitution can be found here. We have an all-volunteer committee of 5 members which includes 3 officers who are voted on each year. Currently, the officers and committee members are:

Chairperson: Michael McClafferty

Secretary: David King

Treasurer: Jim Barnett

Committe members: Elaine Macphee & Andi Damewood

The MGG is funded through course fees, private donations, and grants.
